Hotel review website i-escape has opened up a debate over the use of the term 'boutique hotel'.

The company says the term has become over-used since it was coined in 1980s New York and the industry should adopt a stricter definition. It suggests employing a five step test to assess whether a property is really 'boutique'.

i-escape editor Michael Cullen said: "We would be happy to accept the term is for a small, usually urban hotel with distinctive design, personalised service and independent ownership. But then, we have to admit there are boutique hotel that do not fit that criteria."

In ten years time, hotels will move away from the 'boutique' label and try to stress their difference, he said. "You will find plenty of unique hotels, character hotels, even experience hotels. The green wave is still rolling, so expect even more eco-lodges, nature retreats and carbon-neutral hotels."
