Aviation minister attacks BA over Heathrow Terminal 5 fiasco

(01 April 2008)

Aviation minister Jim Fitzpatrick has criticised British Airways over the chaotic launch of Terminal 5 and revealed that the lost baggage has escalated to 28,000 bags.

In a statement to MPs, he said the situation at Terminal 5 was "unacceptable" and the airline needed to "place much greater emphasis" on passengers' needs. Department of Transport officials have been touch with the airline and BAA over the fiasco, he added.

BA has confirmed that a futher 25 return flights have been cancelled today. A spokesperson said BA was working hard to return the remaining bags to their owners, although maintained the figure was nearer 19,000.

Today's cancellations are short haul and domestic routes, while long haul flights will operate normally. The airline hopes to operate 93% of flights by Thursday.

Analysts have forecast the debacle could cost BA up to £50 million.

Customers flying this week are advised to check the BA website.
