The Kenya Tourist Board is appealing to the trade to help drive tourists to the country after a power-sharing agreement was brokered between the warring political parties.

The deal was struck at the end of last week after more than a month’s worth of negotiations led by former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

He arrived after 1,000 Kenyans were killed in riots following the country’s disputed elections in December which saw President Kibaki re-elected.

Now, following Annan’s departure yesterday, Kenya Tourist Board UK sales and marketing director Angie Meddins said she is hoping the country can win back the tourists it has lost in the wake of the violence with the help of the trade.

She added: “We look forward to continuing to work with you all to ensure a speedy return to the pre-election tourism levels and hope you will join us in celebrating this wonderful news.

“We will continue to provide further updates to the trade as the situation progresses.”

Speaking as he left the country, Annan pledged to return in order to further oversee the peace process. He added: “We want Kenya to return to the old Kenya: stable, peaceful, prosperous and welcoming.”
