Tourist offices must ensure they are contactable 24 hours a day in case of emergency.
Speaking at the ABTA and Association of National Tourist Office Representatives tourist board seminar this week, ABTA member operational support manager Susan Lamb said some tourist offices are still falling short by not offering round-the-clock contact information.
She urged delegates at the seminar to implement changes now rather than wait until a crisis exposes the lack of a system and when it is too late.
"If you don't have your out of hours details or your out of hours contact already available then it is very important that you correct that," she added.
Lamb said the value of such a system was proven most recently with Kenya which has experienced on-going problems since the presidential elections at the end of last year.
She added because of the levels of contact ABTA was able to set up conference calls with the Kenya Tourist Board and start co-ordinating a response to the situation as quickly as possible.
