Unions urge TUI Travel to talk over agency closures

(30 January 2008)

Travel trade union TSSA predicted further agency closures at TUI Travel and has called for urgent talks.

The calls come after TUI Travel revealed it is to close around 100 agencies following a review of the business formed from the merger of TUI and First Choice Holidays.

General secretary Gerry Doherty said: "We warned last year this merger would mean job losses. We fear more closures as the two travel giants maximise profits."

Up to 1,700 cabin crew at Thomsonfly were voting this week on whether to go into dispute over the redundancy threat. A strike ballot could follow if the group refuses to promise there will be no compulsory job losses.

Kevin Hall, regional organiser for the Unite union, said: "Cabin crew are concerned at the announcement about redundancies in the shops." A spokesman said the union had pressed for a guarantee on jobs without success, adding: "We are running out of patience."

Thomsonfly is due to merge with First Choice Airlines by next year.
