Kenyan travel ban likely to continue

(07 January 2008)

Around 1,000 British tourists will have been flown out of Kenya by the end of the today as the political crisis continues.

A Federation of Tour Operators spokesman said there are now around 2,000 tourists from the UK still in the country, mostly staying in coastal resorts.

The FTO has revealed it is not making a decision until this afternoon as to whether to continue its current suspension of holidays to the country. It suspension, which was announced last week, ends today.

However, he added the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s advice against all but essential travel to the country has not changed over the weekend, meaning the FTO’s current stance is unlikely to change either.

The rioting and tribal fighting, which has left more than 300 people dead and around 250,000 people homeless, was sparked following last month’s rigged elections which saw President Kibaki re-elected.
