Nordnorge leads Explorer rescue

(23 November 2007)

MS Nordnorge has just arrived at the scene of the stricken Explorer.

The Hurtigruten owned cruiseliner received a message for assistance from MV Explorer, at approximately 06:00 Norwegian time.

MV Explorer is situated just east of King Georges Island, in the South Shetland Islands.  The passengers and crew are currently on life-boats, and Zodiacs.

Reports say the weather conditions are relatively good, but it is cold.

Nordnorge will be "on-site-commander" which means she will be leading the rescue operation.

Co-ordination and overall responsibility for the rescue operation is with the rescue centre MRCC (Chile) in Valparaiso.
