British Airways was forced to suspend its move to new baggage-handling systems at Heathrow last week after it caused delays of up to two hours for passengers travelling through Terminal 4.

The problem was triggered by the introduction of a resource management system that relays instructions to teams of baggage handlers.

A BA spokesman said the airline had returned to its old system and was reviewing the implementation.

The system is already in use in areas such as cargo, but has yet to be introduced across wider operations and to Terminal 1.

BA aims to combine the ground-handling operations spread across two terminals at Heathrow and move everything into Terminal 5 within a month of its scheduled opening next March.

The spokesman said: "We are changing 100s of processes in preparation. Terminal 5 is one of the most complex moves undertaken in aviation history."
