HWT allays job worries

(29 September 2005)
Harvey World Travel staff have been assured their jobs are safe following the company’s takeover in Australia.

The retail giant – a major travel brand Down Under for more than 50 years – has been acquired in a deal worth around £39 million by Queensland-based property management firm S8.

HWT UK managing director John Donnelly said: “It is business as usual and we’ve told that to all our employees and franchisees. Our performance is in line with our business plan.”

Since launching in the UK in October last year, HWT has snapped up 22 stores belonging to defunct retailer Wardle Travel and now operates 30 outlets. Three more will open next month.

S8 operates 3,500 four and five-star apartments in Australia and has bought HWT to help distribute its product. S8 bosses are expected to arrive in Britain next week to see how expansion in the UK is progressing.
