Paradise on earth. It’s a phrase that, as an industry, we’re all guilty of bandying around just a little too often.

But time and time again it comes up in relation to the Indian Ocean, and to Mauritius in particular. Why? Well, picture perfect beaches have something to do with it, but there’s more to it than that. Choice is the number one reason why travellers are voting with their feet. Because for such a small island, Mauritius packs a lot in.

A few years ago, operators were concerned that the island’s hoteliers were taking the exclusivity thing just a bit too far. Nothing was being built below the fourstar level and the worry was that this would freeze out all but the wealthiest of guests.

Today, Mauritius is hardly a bargain basement destination, but with the concentration of beds at the top end, prices are keen and – as hoteliers try to differentiate their product from the rest – value for money is high.

Take One&Only Le Touessrok. The resort’s new villas come with a butler on call 24 hours a day – if that’s the sort of thing your clients would like, then check out Jeannine Williamson’s report on page six.

If you’ve got a family to please, a couple after romance or somebody looking for nightlife then we’ve also plenty of suggestions with the hotel round up starting on page 10. Luxury is a common theme with all these properties, but you’ll see as you read this guide there’s plenty of choice to be had.

What’s more, access is good. Flag carrier Air Mauritius flies non-stop, six times a week from London, and next summer this goes up to daily.

I hope this guide inspires you to book more Mauritius breaks, or even make a visit to the island yourself. There’s no substitute for first hand knowledge, but a good read of this will start you off the right foot.
