ISLE of Wight ferry operator Wightlink has brought four ships back into use after it was given the go-ahead to resume operations.

The ships were suspended from duty on Thursday last week by the Maritime and Coastal Agency.

The MCA had withdrawn the firm’s safety certificates following an investigation into a fire on one of its four FastCat vessels, Our Lady Patricia, in May, which were not reported as required by international maritime rules.

The safety certificates were reinstated on Friday after Wightlink complied with MCA demands, allowing the ships to be brought back into use at 7.45pm and a full service from Portsmouth to Ryde Pier Head to be resumed.

A Wightlink spokesman said: "We have worked non-stop to put in place the documentation and reporting and other procedures requested by the MCA. Wightlink places the highest priority on the safety of its passengers and crew. The company has an outstanding safety record."
