Police probe ABTA fraud allegations

(16 February 2004)

ABTA has called in the Metropolitan police to investigate an alleged internal fraud that is thought to have cost the association hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The alleged fraud came to light last week when, during the processing of a claim following a travel agency failure, a member of staff became suspicious about the documentation supporting the claim and raised the alarm. An internal investigation into previous claims made in the same name uncovered similar concerns and the police were called in.

A member of staff has been suspended while the investigation continues.
