Mumbai visitors told to be vigilant

(26 August 2003)

TRAVELLERS to India are being warned to be on alert in Mumbai after bomb blasts killed up to 40 people.

One of the blasts yesterday was at the Gateway of India monument next to the Taj Mahal Hotel.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is advising travellers to be vigilant in public places “until the situation becomes clearer”.

Operators said the main tourist season in India didn’t start until October, so operations had not been affected.

A spokeswoman for Abercrombie and Kent said: “Mumbai isn’t a massive destination, the most someone would stay there is two nights.”

She said tourists used it more as an entry or exit point to north or south India.
