Staff 'demotivated' by uncaring bosses

(22 August 2003)

THE trade could be facing a chronic shortage of staff and skills along with a demotivated workforce because of poor employee relations in the

industry, according to research.

The poll of 200 agents, by global distribution systems supplier Amadeus, shows low pay and industrial unrest has led to almost half of those polled - 44% - to consider quitting the industry. Many of the remaining 56% of respondents fear a long stint in the trade has left them unemployable outside the industry.

The survey shows the majority of the workforce are demotivated by low pay, a lack of opportunities and job security.

One agent said: “We’ve been told the company will not offer any pay rises for a while. It makes you think about other options outside the industry.”

Another respondent said: “The pay is too low and we’re treated as if we’re worthless.”
