FCO warns travellers

(21 March 2003)

EFFORTS to persuade holidaymakers to commit to overseas holidays received a major setback after the Foreign and Commonwealth Office dramatically stepped up its travel advice.

The FCO issued a ‘Worldwide Threat’ to British nationals on holiday or living abroad of a heightened risk of terrorism while the war in Iraq continues.

The new statement reads: “The risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks in public places, including tourist sites, will be especially high during military action in Iraq. You should be vigilant, take sensible precautions, be aware of local sensibilities, monitor the media and check FCO travel advice for the country you live in or plan to visit.”

The warning upgrades previous advice which only asked travellers to be “aware” of the terrorism risk.
