Transport chaos after French strikes

(26 November 2002)

HUNDREDS of flights between the UK and France have been cancelled following strike action by French air traffic controllers.

They began a 32-hour strike at midnight in sympathy of a public workers walkout, scheduled for tomorrow.

Approximately 90% of the 4,300 international flights in and out of France have been wiped out.

Those on the ground also face disruption due to strikes by French lorry drivers, who are blocking ferry ports and motorways.

British Airways scrapped 62 flights on Monday and Tuesday from Heathrow and Gatwick, while regional subsidiary BA CitiExpress was forced to cancel 12 flights.

Air France has cut a large number of domestic and short haul flights, but was confident long-haul services would operate normally.

Low-cost carrier Buzz estimated the cost of cancelling all of its flights to France would reach £100,000, with 1,600 passengers affected.

Go was also rescheduling its flights from the UK to Nice and Lyon, while Ryanair has cancelled the majority of its flights.
