Independent Agents Support MyTravel

(25 October 2002)

INDEPENDENT agents are rallying round MyTravel as major rival operators warn customers off the UK number one.

Consortia and independents stress the death of MyTravel would hit the industry hard and put thousands of jobs on the line. MyTravel UK and Ireland chief executive Duncan Wilson outlined the seriousness of the situation by saying: “We have 27,000 people with jobs, mortgages and families.”

Lunn Poly continues to de-rack MyTravel and Thomas Cook is telling clients about the operator’s financial position and running a controversial advert stating its own long-term viability. However, a Travel Weekly investigation of high-street agents found consultants reluctant to sell Airtours and its sister operators.

Independent options development director Sue Foxall said: “There was a lot of mud-slinging at ABTA from the other big operators. Nobody in retailing wants MyTravel to go under because we will all suffer. ABTA should come out and say it is safe for people to book with MyTravel to help the industry.”
