SAT reassures tourists over shooting

(23 October 2002)

SOUTH African Tourism is trying to reassure tourists of the destination’s safety after a British woman was killed and her husband seriously injured in a robbery attempt.

The couple, John and Diane Conway, were staying at the town of Pilgrim’s Rest in the Mpumalanga region when a youth approached them and demanded money.

The robber escaped after shooting both the Conways. Diane was fatally injured while her husband is receiving treatment in intensive care at hospital.

South African Tourism managing director United Kingdom Willem Eksteen said: “We extend our deepest sympathy to the Conway family and hope Mr Conway will soon recover.

“This is not indicative of the destination or a holiday in South Africa. This is a very rare incident.”

He added that a unit of the Serious Violent Crime Unit was investigating the case.
