AIRPORT operator BAA is expecting over 1 million people to travel through its hubs between now and Christmas.

A statement issued by BAA said the busiest day at Stansted would be December 22 and 30, Gatwick December 23 and 30 and Heathrow January 2.

BAA chief executive Mike Hodgkinson said: “With over a million people expected to travel out of airports over the festive weekend this year, clearly people are giving air travel a vote of confidence.”

The top five destinations travellers are heading to over the festive period from Heathrow are, Amsterdam, Dublin, Paris, New York and Edinburgh.

* BAA is advising all passengers to leave Christmas presents unwrapped for security purposes.
