Nafplio
This is a pretty Venetian town on the Greek mainland which is a favourite holiday spot for Athenians in the summer. It can be reached by either bus or ferry from Athens in two hours.
The main square is lively and friendly, but nightlife is low-key. This is not the place to go if you want to party all night.
Towering above the town is the Palamidhi fortress. It has 999 steps up to the top.
Nafplio is 30 minutes by bus from the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, which still hosts plays and concerts. There is a hotel at the site, although Epidaurus is normally taken as a day trip.
Nafplio does not have great beaches, so most people go to Tolo, 20 minutes away by bus.
good for: people who want to get away from it all.
Recommendations: hotels can be costly, so pensions are a good bet. Expect to pay £22 a night for a decent room with a balcony.
