more job losses at Thomas Cook

(27 September 2001)

THOMAS Cook is to axe more than 500 jobs in its retail agencies and JMC Airlines.

The company plans to scrap the role of sales administrator in its smaller shops, affecting 270 people, while in its larger shops 140 sales administrators will have their hours reduced.

Thomas Cook also proposes to make 100 JMC Airlines cabin crew redundant at the end of this year’s summer season.

Chief executive officer of Thomas Cook UK Alan Stewart said: “Over the past 12 months we have made a significant investment in IT and systems which has resulted in a major improvement in the efficiency of how we manage our administration activities in the travel shops. As a result of this we are proposing to phase out or down-size the role of sales administrator.”

Stewart said the decision had been made before the events in the US on September 11.

Only last week the company revealed plans to axe sixty managerial jobs in an attempt to streamline the business.
